Potential starter games

Hello, SCU Games Club interested people! Time for some news!

Member count is about 5 or 6 so far, unofficial of course. You’ll need to make an OrgSync account to become an official member, but since OrgSync is down right now keep following this blog.

The club can’t officially begin until the beginning of winter quarter, and we can’t do that without 15 members. Be sure to tell your friends and e-mail me at jgeist@scu.edu if you’re interested.

Here’s some games that might be interesting to start with:

  • Settlers of Catan: This game has won massive amounts of awards and takes an hour or two to play, a perfect length of time. It allows for a good number of players, as well.
  • Robo Rally: Another game with a lot of players, Robo Rally was designed by Richard Garfield, PHD, inventor of Magic: the Gathering. It’s got fast-paced action that relies on reading your opponents and the board.
  • Pandemic: An interesting game that has players cooperating against a disease rather than competing amongst themselves.
  • Arkham Horror: Lovecraft-themed board game that’s also very cooperative. However, the rule book’s very thick and it might not be something to start out on.
  • Betrayal at House on the Hill: Another horror-themed game and another Wizards of the Coast game, this one is based off all those scary movies in theaters and whatnot.
  • Diplomacy: A very backstabby game and an interesting alternative to Risk. It takes a while, though, so unless we have a permanent meeting space or a good way of recording where everything is we may have some trouble.

E-mail me (at the address above) if you have suggestions for other board games.

In addition, I’m starting up a DnD game (probably 4e) so let me know if you want in. We’ll be able to sync games better if and when the club begins.

I can’t badger you for e-mails and give you nothing back, so here’s the rules to an extremely fun, extremely rules-light, and extremely silly card game that you can play with index cards and pens: http://www.1000blankwhitecards.com/rules

Interested in SCU Games Club?

Hello! If you’re reading this you’ve probably noticed the Games Club flyer. Thank you for your time.

By doing this, you’ve shown interest in SCU’s new Games Club. Let me fill you in a little more about it. The Games Club is dedicated to playing and learning about games of all sorts, from historical games like mah jongg and chess to modern, complex games like Robo Rally and Settlers of Catan.

During club meetings, we would go over the games du jour and then begin a game of it (or just allow people to play the games they wish), as well as continuing sessions of games that last longer than the meeting (like Risk or Diplomacy). We wouldn’t talk a lot about video games (as it’s pretty easy to be filled in on video games at home), but holding a tournament or two is under consideration.

The Games Club will also serve as SCU’s social center for gamers, allowing people to create out-of-meeting sessions of tabletop roleplaying games and the like.

The club will probably be held Thursday evenings, but if enough people say another time works better for them I will take it into consideration (Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are also good).

Possible special events would include:

  • Aforementioned video game tournaments
  • Wizards and ‘Wiches, a fantasy-focused event with free Subway sandwiches for people who sign up

As the club is still being planned, everything is still up for discussion. E-mail me at jgeist@scu.edu if you want to become a member or have suggestions. The club faculty advisor is Dan Ostrov (dostrov@scu.edu).

PLEASE E-MAIL ME IF YOU’RE INTERESTED. I CAN’T START THE CLUB WITHOUT FIFTEEN MEMBERS.
